Cebu is the name given to a city on one of the Philippine Island with the same name. Cebu Island is a large island in the Visayas region just to the east of the larger Negros Island across the Tanon Strait. Cebu City, dubbed "the Queen City" is located on the east coast and is the site of the first Spanish settlement in the country making this the country's oldest city. Today it is a major economic and tourist hub, a center of commerce with a busy seaport and international airport. All visitors will find suitable accommodation in a hotel Cebu offers that cater for business visitors as well as the many tourist and leisure guests that come to enjoy a wonderful beach resort holiday, beautiful scenery and immerse themselves in Philippine culture.

Cebu is also a province in the Philippines consisting of Cebu Island and more than 100 surrounding islands including Batayan, Mactan, Malapascua and Olango. The main tourist areas are Macatan and Badian Islands which are the location of many of the high-end resort hotels Cebu offers. Cebu Island itself is long and narrow, nearly 225 kilometers in length with narrow coastlines and high rugged mountains.

Cebu's rich culture is a testament to the historical heritage which began when the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan first planted the cross on the shores of the island. Today, the island has the highest economic growth rate and leads the nation's progress in exports and attracting tourists. Providing a charming contrast to the bustling city hub, the islets and islands are lined with white sandy beaches and sparkling blue seas that have given it an international reputation for fantastic diving grounds.

The native tongue of the locals is Cebuano with Filipino generally understood and spoken. Visitors need not worry about language barriers though, because English is widely used in business and is spoken by most people. Most people are Roman Catholic with the oldest Christian image in the Philippines enshrined in the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu. Many lovely catholic churches are found throughout the city as well as churches of other denominations, mosques and temples representative of the Islam, Buddhist and Hindu followers on the island.

The best time to visit Cebu is from December to May when the tropical rains cease for awhile resulting in lovely cool to hot dry weather. The easiest mode of transport to get around the city is in one of the many cheap and efficient taxis or a colorful and noisy jeepney. Buses too, are perfect for trips around the island.

Guests to any hotel Cebu offers have easy access to the city's major sites. The lovely architecture of classical American-era buildings in Colon Street, the oldest street in the Philippines is fascinating while the Magellan Cross, Lapu-Lapu Monument and life-size statues of popes add historical significance to the city. Fabulous views over the city from the top of Mount Busay are not to be missed while the vibrant nightlife with clubs, bars and pubs provide plenty of after dark entertainment.
